Born: 15 JAN 1800 Upper Dublin Twp. Montgomery Co. PA Died: 22 SEP 1875 Thompsontown, Juanita Twp. PA Notes: "On his death real estate was sold to James L Kirk for $1000. James L. was probably his son by his first marriage. "I was told by my grandmother, Lillie Given Kirk that she was told by older residents of Juanita Co. that Dr. Kirk had an amazing way with horses and actually used a steed to pull his buggy. He was able to handle any horse. I have a bell from a harness that had been his. As a small child our family used to go for Sunday drives and I had seen the fieldstone house where J.J. and Lydia had lived with her Collins children and their Kirk sons. In November 1993 my son Tom drove me to cemeteries and places where relatives had lived so that I could take snapshots. As we approached the area, I told Tom it might not be standing anymore because the last time I saw it, the porch roof was propped up with boards and the roof of the attached springhouse had fallen in. When we turned the bend and saw the house I could scarcely believe my eyes. Someone had completely restored it with pointed stones, new roofs and windows, beautifully landscaped and decorated. I rapped on the door to ask if I could take pictures of it , but there was no one there. The beautifully painted and decorated a mail box along the road had no name on it. Tom opened the mailbox to see if we could perhaps find a letter and their name. No mail. Across the Macadem road was a flower garden with a rail fence along the road. Among the flowers were placed all the old farm machinery, plows, harrows etc. On the spot where the tumbledown barn had stood is a building including a four car garage and a large modern engineer's and architect's office with several drafting tables. I plan to visit the house again and hope fully talk to the owner". G. Brunner believed that this was Dr. Kirk's second marriage. |
