From obituary:

The subject of this sketch was born in Perry County, Penn, July 15, 1843, and died at his home in College Springs, Iowa, March 14, 1923, being almost eighty years of age. Like many pioneers, his early life lacked the opportunities in the way of education that all young people of the present day enjoy. But he learned in the rugged school of experience and acquired such a broad general knowledge that he was a veritable authority on a great variety of subjects. He was intimately acquainted with the habits of the wild animal life and knew the life history of plants and trees. He loved nature and delighted to live in the great outdoors. For him there were "tongues in trees, books in running streams, sermons in stones and good in everything."

On Sept. 11, 1861, at the age of eighteen years, he enlisted in Company H, 47th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and served seven days over three years, being honorably discharged Sept. 18, 1864. Thus through more than three long years he served his country, early demonstrating that trait which was an outstanding feature throughout all his life, that of service to others. Following his discharge he came west and pursued his trade as a Carpenter.

On Nov. 21, 1872, he was joined in marriage to Miss Annie Boyle in Clarinda and immediately went to Creston, Iowa, where they continued to live until 1876 when they moved to Page county, which has been their home eversince. He followed farming as an occupation for many years. There was nothing of the drone in this man's life. While on the farm he was among the first to put up his hay and his corn was in the crib before many others had

started their work. Between crops and at times when farm work did not crowd, he could work at the Carpenter trade. With all his varied activities he was never too busy to assist those in distress and was a neighbor in the

highest sense of the word. His kindness and honest, fair dealing will ever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him.

The wife of his youth and the children, Nettie J., wife of George Whipp, William B. of Colfax? Township, and G. Dee, of Clarinda, Iowa, are left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. Their youngest daughter, Medea P., wife of James G. McClymonds, preceded her father to the Great Beyond in October, 1920. One grandson, Barney Loudon, died in 1917. Besides the immediate family, twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren are residents of Page county.
