Edgar came with his parents to Michigan in 1837, traveling on a slow boat on the Erie Canal from Waterloo to Buffalo. There they took a sailboat across Lake Erie to Detroit. The trip from Detroit to Ash Township, Monroe County was made by wagon where on October 21, 1835 Jasper S. Reid had patented land. After Rebecca's death in 1870, Jasper married Martha A. Dale on February 13, 1871, in Rutland Twp., Barry Co., Michigan. When Edgar was 19 years old he returned to his old home in New York and remained there for five years. In November of 1855 he returned to Michigan, locating in Baltimore Twp., Barry Co., which was then a comparative wilderness. After staying there two years he then bought a farm, one mile west of Quimby, Hastings Twp. In the summer of 1856 he broke ground not only for himself but others, driving a yoke of six oxen and clearing a place large enough for a log house. On October 14, 1857 he was united in marriage to Sarah E. Hubbell, daughter of Ambrose and Mary Hubbell at the home of the bride's parents in Hastings, Twp. Sarah (Hubbell) Reid was born August 12, 1839 in New York State and died September 22, 1911.

In February of 1865 Edgar enlisted in the Army in Company K 10th Michigan Calvary and joined his regiment at Knoxville, Tenn. He was gone for about one year. Edgar and Sarah had two sons, Ambrose & Jasper and two daughters, Annie (Reid) Ritzman and Nellie (Reid) Castelein. They built a frame house and lived on the farm until their deaths. Edgar died in 1915.
