Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, Clinton Co., MI Notes: farmed 1100 acres; was the first farmer to raise a crop on the muck land, then a swamp farm. Raised maple syrup, peppermint, eggs and chickens, and cattle. One of their relatives (Ben) had been kidnapped by Indians; had been raised by the Perrins who was a lawyer involved in real estate and highly regarded in his community. My Great-Great-Grandfather, Eugene A. Livingston, bought good muck land in Greenbush Twp, Clinton County, and made a very profitable farm. He built two brick homes which still stand as well as a chicken house, barn, and tool shed. He also established a mint which is still in operation to this day. Another venture was a sugar maple refinery which school children often visited in the spring. The original building was damaged in a fire, but his grandson rebuilt it and still runs the operation. The farm looks a bit worse for wear nowadays, but is still in operation. My great-grandfather would be proud of his grandsons who have continued to farm (now his great-grandsons, too). Eugene Livingston's grand-daughter married a teacher, but they eventually bought their own farm (my grandparents). My father bought it from them later on and made it a thriving operation. After he passed away, our youngest brother finally took it over and it is thriving. -Diane DeGraw |
