"Hiram Lowden, the third son of Jacob Lowden and Phoebe Ann Smith, was born near Rochester N.Y., on Dec 19, 1845. He came to Canada with his parents in 1848. In the 1901 census, he gave his background as German and his religion as Methodist. He married Naomi Bush, , who had been born in Ontario, in 1854, in November 1871, and they had twelve children. He had taught in the Banner School, SS #15 Charlottesville Township, in the County of Norfolk. We believe that he was succeeded as teacher by his brother Milton. Another brother, Anson, settled one concession north and a half a mile east. Hiram had felt that, as school teacher, he could not make enough money to raise a family( probably between $150. and $200.) and so started to farm. The farm was almost across the road from the Banner School and all of his twelve children went to school there. Both Hiram, who died in 1936, and Noami, who died March 11, 1926, were buried in the Delhi Cemetery.

"Grandfather Milton Lowden, reported in one of his writings that Hiram had lost part of his hand, at a year and a half, when he and Anson had played with an axe." ~ Betty Audet

A Norfolk Archivist found records for S.S. #15 (Banner School) Charlotteville Twp, Norfolk county, but nothing existed far enough back to determine when Hiram and/or Milton taught there.
