The Thirtieth was organized in Detroit. The Confederate sympathizers and rebel refugees in Ca were becoming so outspoken in their sentiments and so bold in their actions that a raid was anticipated on the towns and cities on the Michigan state side of the river, and as a matter of safety it was deemed expedient to organize a regiment of Michigan troops to prevent the
occurrence of such an event. the regiment was recruited to protect the borders along the Detroit river and lakes from attack. The 30th was mustered into service
Jan, 9 1865, with an enrollment of 995 officers and men for the service of one year. Records show: Wm. H Collar Enlisted in
company A, 30th Infantry Dec 12 1864, at Sylvan, for 1 year, age 17. Mustered out at Detroit MI June 30 1865.
