When William was about fourteen years of age his father died. According to the 1860 census, When
William was 25, he worked as a farm hand on the farm of Thomas Hays is Watts township, Perry
co., Pa. He enlisted in the Union Army on 10 Aug 1862 and served in company C 136th Infantry
(Pvt.) and was discharged 29 May 1963 in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. when William married Catherine
Roth in 1963, he listed his residence as Petersburg , Pa. Petersburg changed to Duncannon and was reincorporated in 1965
He reenlisted on Aug 31 1864 (just after their first son was born) and served in company g 205 Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry
(corporal) and was discharged 1 Jun 1865 in Alexandria, Va. According to military records he was
pensioned at @12 per month on 27 Jun 1890 -Disease and injury of breast and pain in right leg on March through Loudon Valley at or near Warrenton, Va. on or about 7 Nov 1862. Treated in church used as hospital about four days, In an affidavit, he stated he suffered "from exposure on forced march from white Plains to Warrenton, Va. in heavy snow storm."

After the war William and Catherine lived in Williamsport -Walnut near 4th St. They moved around, living for a time in Alexandria
Va., Harrisburg, (36 Linden St.) Sparrows Point, Md. and Centreville, St. Mary's County, Md. They moved back to
Sparrows Point and lived at 17 W.G. St.
William worked at Bethlehem Steel (Penn Street) at company's beginning in Sparrows Point; had a farm in
St. Mary's County and worked in Bethlehem Steel in charge of tool shed in later years. His occupation is listed as
engineer on death certificate. his funeral was from his residence. His grave in Baltimore
National Cemetery is Section B Grave #161
he sometimes took his back pack and retraced his march to Loudon County, Virginia in
1862
